Interview a manager!

Why?
– You can use this for both course work 1 and 2
– LO 1-5
Who?
– Someone who inspires you, who has an interesting job, works for an interesting
company, etc.
– Someone who is at least 5 years in a management position
– Someone who manages more than 4 people
What?
CW 1: Managing in today’s global business contexts
– See interview guide (appendix)
CW 2: Zooming in on 1 topic of interest
– Choose one of the following topics
o Topic 1: HR work in managing teams
o Topic 2: Change management & teams
o Topic 3: Communication – Problem solving and managing team performance
– See interview guides (appendix)
How?
Find a manager
– Use your network
– Who inspires you? Email them!
– Managers at the university
– Ask your peers: do they know an extra person?
– Via the Careers-team via the module leader
(last resort, provide proof of efforts done, not last minute)
Conduct the interview
– Send them the informed consent and participant information form on beforehand
to sign (and upload the signed form on Aula – see research ethics questionnaire).
– Perform the interview Online!
– Take notes, do NOT record!
Prepare the interview
– Do your research on the interview content
– Review the lecture of Unit 1 and 2!

– Pick a topic for CW2 and read the related chapter
– Do your research on the interviewee
– Look into their position and career
o LinkedIn, their CV, company website
– Look into their company
o Company website
o What is written about the company’s history, values, strategy, etc.
– Prepare the questions
o See the interview guides and make sure you understand the questions
before you go to the interview
When?
– As soon as possible!
o It might be difficult to find a manager that is available immediately, so it is
important to search immediately!
o If you would need help, you will need proof that you did not start searching
last minute and that you did your best! (with emails, screenshots, etc.)
– Note that you might need/want to contact the interviewee multiple times (e.g., after
discussing with the other students for CW1 or before preparing CW2) for gathering
extra information.

Coursework 1
Learning outcomes 1,2, 6 – 20%
Part 1: Group presentation
What?
– You only need part 1 of the interview ‘Managing in today’s in global business
contexts’ for CW1
– Team up in groups of 4 students
o Discuss the similarities/differences between the first part of the interviews
“Managing in today’s in global business contexts”:
o Topic A: The different management processes (Q1-4)
• What did they mention?
• What was different?
• What was similar?
o Topic B: The influences of the internal and external environment on
the role of a manager (Q5-6)
• What did they mention?
• What was different?
• What was similar?
– Zoom in on 1 topic and prepare your group presentation (10’ presentation):
o Anonymise, but explain briefly introduce the managers: The types of
managers (positions+ departments), their functions/roles, the size of their
organisations (how many employees, or multi-national, etc.) and the sectors
they work in
o Explain which topic you chose and why
o What are similarities?
• What did they all emphasise?
o What are differences?
• Why do you think they emphasised different things?
o Link your findings to the lecture content and/or scientific articles
o Provide advice/summarised conclusions to the other students
(based on your interview (Q7-8), discussions, lectures or additional research)
• What were the main things you learned from this?
• What should students be aware of as future managers?
When?
– Upload the research ethics questionnaire on beforehand (see above)
– Presentation at week 6 (submit slides 3 days before presentation, before 5PM)

 

Part 2: Individual reflection
What?
– Provide a short reflection on the group work
o How did you (and your team) manage time & resources?
§ Did you plan, organise and monitor the workload, time, quality of the
work well?
o What was your role as a team member?
§ Did you take on a leadership role? Were you more of a follower?
§ What will you do differently in a next teamwork and why?
§ What are your strengths/weaknesses as a future manager of a team
based on this experience (interviews, teamwork, seminars, lectures)?
How?
– Easy to read text
– Be critical
– Add the peer work group evaluation form
– 500 words
When?
– Submit before Friday, week 6 (individual submission) (30/10/2020), before 5P

 

 

Coursework 2
Paper on Topic 1, 2 or 3
Why?
Learning outcomes 3-5 – 60%
What?
– Conduct an interview with a focus on one of the 3 topics:
o Topic 1: HR work in managing teams
o Topic 2: Change management & teams
o Topic 3: Communication for problem solving and managing team performance
– Write the report on
o Anonymise, but explain briefly introduce the managers: The types of
managers (positions+ departments), their functions/roles, the size of their
organisations (how many employees, or multi-national, etc.) and the sectors
they work in
o One of the three topics:
• Topic 1: Analyse how the manager uses different areas of HR work in
managing teams and their performance through their responsibility for
recruitment, selection, training and compensation of employees.
Topic 2: Compare how different management approaches are used to
enable teams to become responsive to change and their role in
managing change.
Topic 3: Analyse different communication methods and techniques
(and the associated roles) used for problem solving and managing
enhanced team performance in a range of team contexts.
o The connection of the interview to the theory in the lectures and cite at
least 6 relevant scientific articles!
• What does the manager do that is supported by the lecture content/
scientific literature?
• What does the manager do that is not supported by/discussed in the
lecture content/ scientific literature?
• Provide a critical view: how could the manager improve her/his
approach (TIP: look into scientific articles and provide a scientifically
underpinned reflection)
o Provide advice, based on your connection of the interview, lecture and
additional scientific research, to future managers

How?  

Written assignment
– Find a natural structure
o Do not just answer the proposed questions
o Make it an easy to read (creative) text
o Cite at least 6 scientific articles
o Write scientifically and cite in APA style
– Be critical
– 1500 words
When?
– Submit on Friday of week 12 (11/12/2020), before 5PM, on Aula
– Marks will be released 2 weeks after submission dates.
