A.P. Møller – Mærsk A/S, one of the world’s leading industrial groups, continues to transform
its corporate and business structure for many years. The company, in the last few years, is under
sustained pressure to improve its business focus in the face of regulatory measures, changing
competition, and emerging technologies. The ‘Strategic review and change of management’ of
22 September 2016 announced that the Board of Directors of A.P. Møller – Mærsk A/S had
tasked their management to perform a review focusing on the strategic and structural options
for the Maersk Group with the objective of generating growth, increasing agilities and
synergies and unlocking and maximising shareholder value with the long-term view. In the
years following the announcement of ‘Strategic review and change of management’ in 2016,
A.P. Møller – Mærsk A/S identified various strategic options for change and implemented them
to sustain its competitive advantage. In this regard, critically discuss the following questions
(a) Identify the various strategic options identified in A.P. Møller – Mærsk’s ‘Strategic review
and change of management’ document and the rationale behind them;
(b) While discussing the ‘strategic fit’ of A.P. Møller – Mærsk A/S’s erstwhile strategic policy,
critically analyse the need for the corporation to review their strategic options;
(c) Based on the current market position and financial performance of A.P. Møller – Mærsk
A/S, critically review the effectiveness of various strategies implemented since 22 September
2016 to improve the business focus A.P. Møller – Mærsk A/S; and
(d) In addition to the strategies identified and effected, were there any other strategies that the
firm could have effectively considered and implemented to improve its business focus. If so,
list the strategies according to your preference.
